Third month as a copywriter

Month 3 of going full-time as a copywriter.

Here’s what I’ve learned so far (the hard way):

The work is the easy part.

Writing emails is Fun.

Editing is Fine.

Hitting deadlines. Mmm, manageable.

These are not HARD.

But the real challenge is everything else.

  • Finding clients
  • Sending cold DMs
  • Chasing invoices
  • Setting boundaries
  • Managing your own brain

Etc. Etc. And etc.

Turns out, I am working more as a business owner than a copywriter.

Momentum > motivation.

Some days I feel like a creative genius.

Other days I stare at a blank doc for an hour.

I’ve learned not to wait around for ā€œmotivation.ā€

Instead, I just do one tiny thing to start:

  • Open the brief.
  • Write one sentence.
  • Read a past email I liked.

Little things get the momentum goin’.

Most of the fear was in my head.

Before I made a switch in my career,

I was genuinely scared.

ā€œWhat if I fail?ā€

ā€œWhat if I can’t find clients?ā€

ā€œWhat if I’m not good enough?ā€

But every step I’ve taken has shown me:

You figure it out as you go.

And you’re usually more ready than you think.

Clarity makes everything easier.

When I know:

  • Who I help
  • What I offer
  • What problems I solve

…selling doesn’t feel hard anymore.

It just feels that you’re just helping them.

Freelancing can get lonely.

There are no coworkers to bounce ideas off.

Just me and my laptop.

So I make time for

Calls Communities Checking in with other freelancers.

Who thought that human stuff matters more than I expected?

Money comes in waves.

Some weeks feel like I’m on top of the world.

Others? Crickets. 🪹

I’m learning not to panic when it’s slow.

Just keep pitching, keep building, and trust the process.

Boundaries keep you sane.

I’ve stopped saying ā€˜yes’ to everything.

(Ofc for my mental sanity.)

I’ve had to learn how to:

  • Push back on timelines.
  • Charge for extra revisions.
  • Log off without guilt.

It’s only month 3.

I’ve made mistakes.

I’ve sent ugly drafts.

I’ve doubted myself.

But I’ve also learned more in 90 days than I did in years of playing it safe.

If you’re thinking of making the leap?

This is your sign.

Peace!

P.S. Tried a new style of email for this one. Did you like it? Reply 'yes' if you did.

"bro what happened to all of your emails?" This is probably the third time I've seen this reply under my emails. And I am kinda tired of these replies. My emails keep going into spam. No matter what I try. So I guess it is time to change things up a bit. I am switching from a FREE email address to a paid one. Most probably it'll do the job for me. Until I do that, I'll be a bit inactive in your inbox. So a short goodbye from me until I fix things. See you soon, Suv the copy 'eater' P.S. I...
